Are digital Waste Transfer Notes legally valid in the UK?
Yes. WasteBolt WTNs meet all requirements of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and Duty of Care Regulations. Electronic signatures are legally binding under UK law (Electronic Communications Act 2000). Documents are accepted by the EA, NRW, SEPA, and NIEA.
What is an EWC code and why does it matter?
The European Waste Catalogue (EWC) code is a six-digit classification for every type of waste, in the format XX XX XX (e.g. 17 05 04 for soil). WasteBolt validates EWC codes to the correct format and lets you search the full reference list. Using the wrong format can invalidate your WTN during an EA inspection.
What's the difference between a WTN and a Season Ticket?
A standard WTN covers a single transfer. A Season Ticket covers multiple repeat transfers of the same waste type between the same parties — valid for up to 12 months. Once signed, it covers all loads during that period without requiring a new note for each collection.
Can my driver complete the WTN on their phone?
Yes. WasteBolt is mobile-first and designed to work on any smartphone or tablet. Drivers can create WTNs in the cab or on the loading bay. All dropdowns scroll correctly on mobile, and the date picker and weight fields are touch-optimised.
What is an RPS number and when do I need one?
A Regulatory Position Statement (RPS) is issued by the EA when a formal permit or exemption doesn’t apply. Part C (Waste Receiver) requires either a permit/exemption number OR a valid RPS number in the format "RPS XXX" or "RPS XXX v1.0". WasteBolt validates the format and warns you if neither is provided.
Do I need a hazardous waste consignment note as well?
If the waste is classified as hazardous (determined by HP codes HP1–HP15), you need a Hazardous Waste Consignment Note rather than a standard WTN. WasteBolt’s hazardous form includes HP code selection, POPs components with concentration data, consignment code generation, and a special handling requirements field.
